Who we are

Readably is a Chrome extension that helps you read more comfortably online. It is operated by GbR Nikos Kotsakis und Myrto Papagiannakou, Dolziger Str. 14, 10247 Berlin, Germany.

What data Readably stores and where

Readably stores two types of data, in two different places.

Synced preferences — stored via chrome.storage.sync

When you turn a feature on or off, change your font, tint, column width, or any other preference, Readably saves those settings to Chrome's sync storage. This means your preferences follow you across devices automatically if you are signed into Chrome. Google handles the syncing infrastructure; their privacy policy applies to that transfer. Readably itself never sends your preferences to its own servers.

This includes: feature toggles, font choice, colour tint, column width, typography and alignment settings, disabled features, corner style, default section, and licence key.

Device-only data — stored via chrome.storage.local

Some data never leaves your device. This includes your per-site accessibility profiles, your blocked sites list, and any quick notes you write. This data is stored locally in your browser and is not synced or transmitted anywhere.

Payments

Premium subscriptions are processed by Paddle, our payment provider and merchant of record. Being the merchant of record means Paddle, not Readably, is the seller for tax and compliance purposes. When you purchase a subscription, Paddle collects and processes financial and payment information — your name, email address, billing address, and payment details — and handles applicable sales tax and VAT on our behalf. Readably does not store or have access to your card information. Paddle's privacy policy governs how they handle your payment data.

When you complete a purchase or enter a licence key, the extension sends a transaction ID or subscription ID to our own backend (getreadably.com/.netlify/functions/verify-licence). This backend checks with Paddle whether the ID is valid and returns only a valid or invalid result to the extension. It does not receive or store your payment details — only the transaction or subscription identifier needed to confirm your purchase.

Licence key

Your Premium licence key functions as a credential: it is what unlocks Premium features, and the extension treats it accordingly. It is stored locally in your browser via chrome.storage.sync so it syncs across your devices; Readably does not store your licence key on its own servers.

Analytics and error reporting

The Readably extension itself does not collect any analytics or error reporting directly — there is no tracking code running inside the extension.

Separately, we use the Chrome Web Store's built-in Developer Dashboard analytics (install counts, uninstall stats, ratings) to understand aggregate extension usage. This data is collected and provided by Google as part of the Chrome Web Store platform — it does not involve any tracking script running on getreadably.com or inside the extension itself.

If we introduce analytics or error reporting directly within the extension in the future, we will update this policy before doing so and, where required by law, ask for your consent.

The landing page

The getreadably.com website does not currently run any analytics or tracking scripts of its own. The /upgrade page loads Paddle's checkout technology to process purchases, which may set cookies as part of completing your payment; this is governed by Paddle's privacy policy, linked above. It also sends a transaction or subscription ID to our own licence-verification backend, as described under Payments. If that changes, this policy will be updated accordingly.

Website content

Two features send page content you interact with to third parties, for the sole purpose of returning a result to you:

• Word Lookup — when you select a single word on a page, Readably sends that word to api.dictionaryapi.dev, a third-party dictionary API, to retrieve and display its definition.
• Translate Page — when you click Translate, Readably opens the current page's URL in Google Translate (translate.google.com) in a new tab, so Google can translate the page for you.

Neither feature sends anything unless you actively use it, and neither sends data to Readably's own servers — the word or URL goes directly from your browser to the third party providing the feature.

Your rights under GDPR

If you are based in the European Union or EEA, you have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your data
• Object to or restrict how we process your data
• Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

Because most data in Readably is stored locally in your browser, you can delete it at any time by uninstalling the extension or clearing Chrome's extension storage. For anything related to payment data, contact Paddle directly.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Readably evolves. When we make meaningful changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review it occasionally.
